The socio-historical necessity created by the political-economic
scenario of 1990s played the genetic role to beget the Trinamool
Congress to democratically fight the continuing Stalinist
subjugation-based on terror and rigged election in West Bengal.
The nationalism in Mamata Banerjee prompted her also to visualise
the threat being posed to the Indian National security by
the CPI(M)’s efforts to cause Stalinist penetration
into the body-politic of India through West Bengal being located
on the sensitive international border directly with Nepal,
Bhutan and Bangladesh and indirectly with China through Sikkim.
During Rajiv Gandhi’s leadership of the Indian National
Congress, he disfavoured the “Power-Brokers” inside
the Indian National Congress who then had to go either to
oblivion or to some other party.
With the unfortunate assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1988,
some of the “Power-Brokers” who earlier vowed
not to come back to the Congress made re-entry into the Congress.
They re-engaged themselves to manipulate the political strategies
and tactics of the Indian National Congress in a manner beneficial
to them. Therefore they were not hesitant to make any covert
compromise with the CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist,
although there was no ideological compatibility or programmatic
proximity between the Congress and the CPM. The CPM earlier
undertook extensive mass-campaign maligning Rajib. Furthermore,
the CPM being committed to Stalinism is ideoligically against
democracy, democratic socialism, religions and nationalism.
Seemingly the covert understanding between the said power-broker
leaders of the Congress and the CPM of West Bengal was that
while the CPM will secretly support either directly or indirectly
the Congress will not destabilise the CPM rule continuing
through the CPM-sponsored terror and rigged elections in West
Bengal. Therefore, the CPM also assisted some of the power-brokers
of West Bengal Congress to get birth either in the State Assembly
or in the Parliament.
The political conscience of Mamata Banerjee – known
as leader of the grass-root (Trinamool)-level political activists
since her early days of political career as Student’s
leader in 1968 – revolted against the said undemocratic
and pro-Stalinist maneuvering. Specially since 1996, she tried
her best constantly to persuade the then central leadership
of the Congress to take cognizance of the growing wrath of
the people of West Bengal against the continuing CPM regime
but in vain. She was utterly frustrated when she found that,
negating her honest pleadings, the Central leadership nominated
– for the Parliamentary and State Assembly Elections
in 1996 – such candidates whom the suffering people
of West Bengal perceived as “Tarmuj” (Watermelon)
meaning “green” (Congress-façade) outside
but “red” (CPM-supporter) inside.
In the Parliament, she was upset to realise that she was not
being allowed to speak on important issues in the Parliament.
She was sad when she rightly perceived that the power-brokers
were behind the ouster of the socialist Government of Deb
Gowda at the center.
During the time of the succeding Gujral Government, she felt
hurt to sense that the Congress has opted even to forget Rajiv
Gandhi, when she saw that the Congress leadership did not
come forward to support her notice for discussion in the Parliament
as well as her representation to the President of India and
the Speaker of the Parliament on the issue pertaining to the
findings of the Jain Commission identifying the factors failing
to prevent the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
Meanwhile, the state-sponsored Stalinist terror by the CPM-unrestrained
by the Central leadership of the Congress-escalated against
the wealth, dignity and life of even the proletairat in West
Bengal. The suffering populace identified in Mamata Banerjee
their genuine anti-CPM “messiah”. Naturally throughout
West Bengal, these grass-root people en masse came forward
to support the pro-people cause of Mamata Banerjee. The then
Congress leadership choose to expel Mamata Banerjee from the
Indian National Congress on 22nd December’1997.
Under these compelling circumstances, Mamata Banerjee decided
on 23rd December’1997 to form her anti-Stalinist party
and cheristened it as “Trinamool Congress”. The
party got itself registered with the Election Commission of
India during mid December ’1997. The Election Commission
alloted to the party an exclusive symbol of “Jora Ghas
Fool”. The Jora Ghas Fool designed by Mamata Banerjee
herself, symbolises the down-trodden grass-root flowers.
While two flowers represent Hindu and Muslim communities,
three petals in each flower are symbols of nationalism, secularism
and democratic socialism. Naturally the aim and objectives
of Trinamool Congress, as enunciated in its Party Constitution
are Nationalism, Securalism, Socialism and Democracy. It may
be remembered that the political philosophy of Netaji Subhash
Chandra Bose considered all the said four elements as vital
for nation-building.
After the completion of all the needed formalities, people
– in – billions throughout West Bengal –
observed the birth of the Trinamool Congress on 1st January’1998
when the Trinamool Congress ushered in as Left-oriented Socialist
Party having ideology in favour of Democratic Socialism and
agaisnt Stalinism.
The newly born Trinamool Congress, in alliance with the National
Democratic Alliance comprising, inter alia, the anti-Congress
– Bharatiya Janata Party as well contested in 29 seats
of West Bengal in the Parliamentary Elections of 1998. The
growing popularity of Mamata Banerjee panicked the CPM so
much that the Staninist CPM made it a policy ot marshall all
its machinations, incuding State sponsored terrorism against
the Trinamool Congress supporters and deployment of goons
to annihilate even Mamata Banerjee – the boldest voice
in favour of rescuing democracy from the continuing demonic
rule of the Stalinists.
Inspite of all-out machiavellian efforts of the CPM-Congress
nexus, the Trinamool Congress candidates including Mamata
Banerjee won 7 Parliamentary seats in the Parliamentary Elections
of 1998.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi has gained the frontal leadership
of the Congress. Naturally it was expected that the rule of
the power-brokers would end and the Rajiv Gandhi legacy will
be re-invigorated. Such optimism persuaded Mamta Banerjee
to respond to the call of the Congress for joint fight against
the CPM in the election of the West Bengal State Assembly
in 2001.
Mamata Banerjee was so dedicated to her fight against Stalinism
that – with a view to smoothening the so-assured joint
fight of the Congress with the Trinamool Congress with the
Trinamool Congress against the CPM – she even disassociated
Trinamool Congress from the alliance of the National Democratic
Alliance.
Therefore, she unhesitantly resigned from the coveted post
the Railway Minister of the Vajpai Government.
Alas, her optimism was belied. She was betrayed again and
back – stabbed by the coterie of the power-broker-leaders
of the Congress who thereby facilitated the re-victory of
the CPM in the said elections.
Under the circumstances, she returned back to the Natinal
Democratic Alliance. When the National Democratic Alliance
failed to get the majority after the Parliamentary Elections
of 2004, and the Congress regained its rule in the Central
Government with the support of the Stalinist CPM, the CPM
re-invigorated its scheme to destabilise the Trinamool Congress.
The Stalinist CPM, in the interest of its continuing power
in West Bengal, is desirous to have Soviet-type opposition-less
regime in West Bengal and therefore works out to weaken the
most effective opposition party Trinamool Congress. The Congress,
in the interest of maintaining its regained power in the Central
Government, is desirous to keep the CPM in good humour, even
at the cost of Trinamool Congress and democracy.
Therefore, on the eve of the State-wide Municipal Elections
in May’2005, the activists of the CPM-Congress nexus
lured some leaders and workers of the Trinamool Congress by
promising them of lucrative political booty. They were given
the task by the above said nexus to create intra-party trouble
within the Trinamool Congress on the eve of the said Municipal
Elections.
Sadly, some of those “agent provocateurs” were
even personallly benefited by Mamata Banerjee who gave them
either coveted posts in the Trinamool Congress-ruled Calcutta
Municipal Corporation or in the bench of the West Bengal State
Assembly. A husband-wife team in the gang of conspirators
has exhibited so much of ungratefullness to Mamata Banerjee
that they conveniently forgot that the party supremo gave
the husband MLA-ship and gave the wife not only membership
in the Mayoral Council of the Calcutta Corporation but also
personally appeared in the Court to defend her when whe was
arrested by the police on the basis of flimsy complaints lodged
by pro-CPM elements in the Calcutta Corporation.
Mamata Banerjee – not a white-color desk-oriented politician
but a bare-foot grass root-level leader of the down trodden
people of West Bengal – could rightly sense the conspiracy.
She decided not to bow to any pressure from the conspirators
within the party to align with any pro-CPM party as she genuinely
percieves that whoever supports the CPM in effect supports
the Stalinism.
No doubt the people of West Bengal being the victim of Stalinist
atrocities continuously for 28 years-appreciated the efficacy
and wisdom shown by Mamata Banerjee in her momentous decision
favouring ideological integrity and organisational firmness.
