Chairperson of All India Trinamool Congress – MAMATA BANERJEE, M.P.

She was born on 5th January’1955. Her father Late Promileswar Banerjee was a Freedom-fighter. Her mother Smt. Gayatri Banerjee provided immense support to her husband to fight for country’s freedom despite the economic pangs of a middle class family. Mamata Banerjee inherited the spirit of righteous fighting from her parents.

Even during her early days as student she showed some penchant for social works. She joined in the West Bengal Chatra Parishad while she was studying at Jogmaya Debi College, Calcutta.

After she got her Bachelors Degree in Arts (B.A.), she worked as a Teacher in a primary School of South Calcutta, near to her house, for some time. She also got her Bachelors Degree in Education (B.Ed.) and got specialised training in Work Education. But with her growing involvement in politics, she could not persue her teaching profession and also subsequently legal profession after she obtained Bachelors Degree in Law (LLB.) and Masters Degree in Arts (M.A.).

She worked as a Member in the Working Committee of the said Chatra Parishad during 1977 – 83. She held the post of General Secretary, West Bengal Mahila Congress (Indira) from 1979-80. She was Secretary, West Bengal Provincian Trade Union Congress from 1981 to 1987. During the period 1983-88, she was Secretary of the Women wing of the Indian National Trade Union Congress. She was also Secretary, South Calcutta District Congress (Indira) in 1980-85. In 1984, she was elected Member of Parliament from Jadavpur Parliamentary Constituency. She held the post of the General Secretary of Youth Congress (Indira) during 1986-87 and became a Member in the National Council of the said Youth Congress in 1987.

She got elected as Member of Parliament from South Calcutta Parliamentary Constituency in 1991 and 1996 also. She became a Member of the Executive Committee of the Congress Parliamentary Party in 1988. She was made Member of several Parliamentary Committees during her tenure as Parliamentarian. She became Member of the Executiv Committee of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress (Indira) Committee in 1989. She was appointed Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Women and Child Development, Government of India in 1991.

She travelled extensively aborad. Viz the United States of America (USA), Russia

Her anti-Stalinist Party Trinamool Congress came into existence on 1st January’1998.

She was elected as Member of Parliament in 1998, 1999 and 2004 from South Calcutta Parliamentary Constituency.

During the tenure of Shri Atal Behari Vajpaie as Prime Minister, she became Cabinet Minister for Railways in 1999 and Cabinet Minister for Coal and Minies in 2004.

In addition to her intrinsic propensity towards the people-friendly politics, she has got inborn interest in music, writing and painting.

She has painted as many as 5000 Paintings as on 1st June’2005. Many of her paintings were shown even in solo exhibitions. The entire sale proceeds from such exhibitions were donated by her to various ventures for people’s welfare.

The maiden Cassettee as Lyricist “CHOTODER JANYA MAMATA” received Golden Disk Award. The songs were sung by eminent singers like Smt. Sreeradha Bandopadhyay, Indrani Sen, Saikat Mitra, Pratik Chowdhury, Sanat Singha, Ankita Deb and many others.
